Work environment assessment refers to the process of examining the institution's overall workplace environment. The assessment focuses on incivility as a problem that still negatively impacts how healthcare organizations operate. Due to workplace hostility and the higher patient populations, nurses believe their line of work is more dangerous than other professions (Griffin & Clark, 2014). The assessment examines issues that nurses face, including rudeness and other concerns, and explores various solutions.
A healthy workplace encourages open discussion about rudeness and deals with problems in a well-organized, efficient way. Incivility refers to rude, impolite, or disrespectful behavior that may or may not have a malicious aim. Unfortunately, rudeness at work is a typical occurrence in the nursing industry, and it can severely impact the nurses' well-being and capacity to provide patient care. Workplace environment assessment is one of the tools available that may be used to evaluate the state of a workplace and offer recommendations for how to resolve problems there.
In addition, a civil workplace climate is a vital asset for healthcare institutions aiming for long-term success, high-quality treatment, and improved patient outcomes (Clark, 2022). Analysis of Workplace Civility Within a Psychiatric Healthcare Facility
According to the Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory results, the psychiatric workplace is healthy. Scores in the inventory that fall between 90 and 100 indicate a healthy workplace environment. The inventory results demonstrate a high level of civility in the workplace. People can avoid violence and other improper conduct by allowing open dialogue and constructive conflict resolution (Keashly et al., 2020).
The institution's nurse leaders have the necessary conflict resolution abilities and are typically eager to help staff members with their problems and provide guidance. While preventing burdening individuals with other people's roles, the supervisors ensure that everyone completes their tasks. For example, the organization mandates that new nurses be treated with respect and that no one bullies others. The staff is conscious of the diversity of people and the necessity of working together to produce positive results.
Organizational Factors Supporting a Respectful Workplace Culture
The psychiatric facility workplace is civil, and there are several reasons it is civil. First, there is effective communication between individuals. The workplace scored a 4 on the element of communication from the inventory. Although there is room for improvement, the transparency of communication makes it possible to resolve problems before they become more catastrophic.
There are also efficient ways to help individuals resolve conflicts and stop people from taking advantage of others. In addition, leaders set an example by being honest and treating others fairly. Also, individuals may feel gratified when they are involved in governance procedures. Leaders can identify problems that affect individuals and cooperate with them to create solutions that could lead to better results because of shared governance (Clark et al., 2011).
The organization does not only manage individuals like objects since it is concerned with the rights and needs of its employees. People enjoy working there because they feel the organization takes care of them. These characteristics contribute to employee satisfaction, organizational commitment, and a positive work environment that supports both staff well-being and quality patient care.
Personal Experience of Workplace Incivility and Conflict Resolution
In my profession, I once encountered a situation where I experienced incivility. A senior nurse bullied me when I got employed in my current psychiatric workplace. I was forced to perform the nurse's duties, sometimes with which I did not feel comfortable. Bullying frequently occurs, especially when it targets those with less power (Griffin & Clark, 2014).
The nurse initially threatened me to take over her tasks because I was a less experienced nurse before recognizing that I was obliged to decline gently. I used to feel horrible and exhausted from overworking, which made me despise my employment due to the bullying. Consequently, I informed my supervisor that I was being taken advantage of and described the several instances it had occurred.
The supervisor contacted the culpable nurse and spoke with her regarding the situation. Following the warning, the nurse ceased abusing and taking advantage of me. As a result, I understood that communication is significant in expressing an issue of concern (Clark, 2015). The experience demonstrated the importance of reporting workplace problems promptly and utilizing available organizational support systems.
Promoting Civility Through Leadership and Open Communication
Healthcare amenities should inspire individuals to express themselves to receive assistance and satisfaction. Leaders play a critical role in establishing workplace expectations, modeling respectful behavior, and responding appropriately to reports of incivility. Effective leadership creates a culture where employees feel psychologically safe and valued.
Organizations that prioritize civility are better positioned to support employee engagement, teamwork, and patient-centered care. Open communication channels, conflict management strategies, and employee involvement in decision-making processes contribute significantly to maintaining a healthy workplace environment. By addressing workplace incivility proactively, healthcare organizations can improve staff morale, reduce turnover, and enhance the quality of care provided to patients.
Implications for Sustaining Healthy Healthcare Work Environments
Workplace civility is an essential component of effective healthcare delivery and organizational success. The assessment of the psychiatric facility demonstrates that healthy workplace cultures are built through respectful communication, supportive leadership, conflict resolution mechanisms, and employee involvement. Although instances of incivility may occur, prompt intervention and organizational support can successfully resolve these challenges.
