Clinical Assessment of Suspected Chlamydia Psittaci Pneumonia
The patient could be suffering from severe pneumonia caused by Chlamydia psittaci. Approximately 1% of instances of community-acquired pneumonia are thought to be triggered by Chlamydia psittaci pneumonia, a zoonotic disease spread by the C. psittaci bacterium. Clinical symptoms of Chlamydia psittaci infections vary from asymptomatic infections to severe pneumonia and systemic illness (Dai et al., 2022). The patient complains of a productive cough, chest congestion, fever, chills, and poor appetite for one week. The cough is productive of greenish sputum, sometimes tinged with a small amount of blood. As reported by the patient, the vital signs of severe pneumonia are a temperature of 101.2°F, a pulse of 100 beats/min, respirations of 24 breaths/min, and BP of 122/88 mmHg (Pickstock, 2019). These clinical manifestations reflect the symptoms of Chlamydia psittaci pneumonia, which suggests that the patient could be suffering from severe pneumonia. The patient should undergo differential and principal diagnoses based on these clinical manifestations.
Diagnostic Procedures and Evaluation Strategies for Confirming Pneumonia
A differential diagnosis is a list of ailments or disorders that could be the source of the symptoms based on the patient's information. Before making a differential diagnosis, the doctor will gather background data on the patient's symptoms and health history (Seladi-Schulman, 2018). A doctor can only provide a principal diagnosis after completing all required examinations and tests. It explains the fundamental reason for a patient's primary admission to the hospital (Definitive Healthcare, 2022). Some of the differential diagnosis procedures and diagnostic tests the physician may conduct on the patient include medical history and physical examination, chest X-ray, blood tests, and pulse oximetry. The principal diagnosis may consist of specific diagnostic tests, including sputum, blood gas, and polymerase chain reaction tests (NHLBI, 2022). In addition, some of the questions to ask the patient are: How long has the cough persisted? Do you have chest pains? Do you experience pain when coughing? How do you feel? These questions are helpful to the physician in deciding the best diagnosis and care plan for the patient.
