This marked a 12 percent increase from the previous year, highlighting a worsening national crisis.
The data also shows that homelessness takes different forms. Around 40 percent of individuals were unsheltered, meaning they lived in places not meant for human habitation, while others stayed in emergency shelters, transitional housing, or safe havens. This distinction is important because unsheltered individuals often face greater health risks due to exposure to harsh environmental conditions and limited access to healthcare services.
At the state level, Arkansas has also experienced fluctuations in homelessness rates. The Role of Nurses
Nurses play a vital role in addressing the healthcare needs of individuals experiencing homelessness. As frontline healthcare providers, they are uniquely positioned to deliver accessible and compassionate care. Nursing interventions often extend beyond traditional clinical settings and include outreach programmes, mobile health units, shelters, and community clinics.
Services provided by nurses may include primary health assessments, mental health evaluations, substance use counselling, wound care, immunisations, and health education. In addition, nurses can facilitate referrals to social services and other healthcare providers, ensuring continuity of care.
Importantly, nurses also advocate for vulnerable populations, working to reduce health disparities and improve access to care. Their role involves not only treating immediate health concerns but also addressing the broader social determinants of health that contribute to homelessness.
