Comparative Overview of Genre-Specific Text Types in Globalization Discourse

Many different genres and text types cover subjects related to commerce and international business. These text types include magazine or newspaper articles, scholarly journal articles, books, presentations, and reports. Each of the text types is commonly distinguished and recognizable by specific characteristics. It means that before starting their work, authors must be conscious of the structure and style expected of them, depending on their text type. By reading these resources, students can understand the fundamentals of a writing assignment from a teacher and the features of particular papers they may be assigned. The comparison will make a review of two articles, "Populism and the economics of globalization" by Rodrik (2018) and "A chance to reboot globalisation" by Carney (2021), which are based on the topic of globalization.

Contrasting Approaches to Knowledge Construction in Academic and Journalistic Writing

The articles fall into different text types and employ different structural features and genres. The article by Rodrik (2018) follows the approach of an academic journal paper, while Carney's article takes a news article's model. Both pieces support claims to knowledge in different ways. Generally, claims to knowledge or facts can be made or endorsed by referencing other related works, personal experiences, or expressing one's thoughts. Carney (2021) makes claims about knowledge concerning globalization and supports them through personal experiences and expressing personal opinions about the topic. For example, while making his claims, Carney recounts his meeting with other G7 central bank governors and finance ministers in the protected Cash Room of the US Treasury. Carney (2021) further made his claims regarding the COP26 UN Climate Change Conference, which was to happen in November 2021, and how it would introduce a new financial system. On the contrary, Rodrik (2018) supports his knowledge claims by referring to research works by other people on the same topic. For instance, Rodrik (2018) cited research by Judis in 2016 and Kazin in 1998 while claiming to represent the people against the intellectuals, being opposed to liberal economics and globalization, and frequently having a preference for authoritarian governance.

Structural and Organizational Differences Between Scholarly and Media Articles

Additionally, the articles use structured devices, including titles, introductions, paragraph structure, headings, and conclusions. The titles of the articles differ in their formulation and the message they carry. For instance, the article by Carney (2021) is formulated to focus on the awakening of globalization, while Rodrik's article is framed to focus on the popularity and economics of globalization. Rodrik (2018) gives his article a particular structure by introducing headings, including abstract, introduction, trade and redistribution, perils of financial globalization, and references, among others. On the contrary, Carney (2021) does not introduce any heading structure or abstract, although he introduces specific headings in the middle of his article. In terms of paragraphing, the articles have different paragraph structures. Carney's article paragraphs are short, with a maximum of five sentences, whereas Rodrik's article paragraphs are long, with more than five sentences.

Variation in Linguistic Style and Applicability for Academic Use

The articles also vary in the use of language, in that the article by Carney (2021) uses complicated vocabulary with idioms. For example, in the introduction, he says, "All we had was a long, garbled communiqué written in toothless G7-speak." On the other hand, Rodrik (2018) uses simple language that is easier for anybody to understand. For instance, in the introduction, Rodrik (2018) says, "It is easier for populist politicians to mobilize along ethno-national/cultural cleavages when the globalization shock becomes salient in the form of immigration and refugees." Finally, an academic essay might use Rodrik's article as a peer-reviewed article for referencing politics and economics revolving around globalization. Carney's article might be used in an academic essay when the writer is supposed to write about personal experiences and thoughts about globalization.
