Diversity in the United States Military
Diversity and Inclusion Across United States Military Life
As a citizen of the United States, I have always been aware of the military’s role in defending our country and promoting its interests abroad. I have also learned about the military’s history of diversity, including the integration of African Americans and the acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals. However, I had not given much thought to the full extent of diversity within the military or the ongoing efforts to promote inclusivity. Diversity in the military is a complex and multifaceted topic and one that is important to consider from various angles. Through the lenses of history, the humanities, natural and applied sciences, and social sciences, it is possible to gain a deeper understanding of the many ways in which diversity affects all aspects of military life.
Historical Development of Diversity in the United States Military
Looking at the topic through the historical lens, it is clear that diversity in the military is not a new concept. The Continental Army during the American Revolution was diverse, with soldiers coming from various ethnic and racial backgrounds. However, it was not until 1948 that President Harry S. Truman signed Executive Order 9981, desegregating the military and paving the way for greater diversity (Daniel et al., 2022). This was a significant event in the history of the military and civil rights. In the years since Executive Order 9981, there have been numerous other efforts to promote diversity in the military. The Women’s Armed Services Integration Act of 1948 allowed women to serve in regular military units, and the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in 2011 allowed LGBTQ+ individuals to serve openly. These events demonstrate the military’s commitment to inclusivity, although there is still room for improvement.
Cultural and Societal Significance of Military Diversity
When examining the topic through the humanities lens, it is important to consider the cultural and societal context in which diversity in the military exists. The military is a reflection of society, and promoting diversity within its ranks can help break down barriers and promote understanding and acceptance within the larger culture. The military also serves as a leader in diversity, setting an example for other institutions to follow. The acceptance of diverse individuals within the military can have a positive impact on how these groups are perceived and treated in society at large.
Objective Standards and Evidence-Based Military Decision-Making
From a natural and applied sciences perspective, the military relies on objective data and evidence-based decision-making. This is particularly relevant when evaluating the capabilities of diverse individuals. The military uses standardised testing and physical fitness requirements to ensure that all service members are capable of performing their duties, regardless of their backgrounds (Vanderschuere & Birdsall, 2018). Ensuring that all service members meet the same standards helps create a level playing field and promotes fairness within the military.
Social and International Effects of Military Diversity
Through the social sciences lens, it is evident that diversity in the military has a wide-reaching impact on society. It helps create a more representative and fair military, which can foster trust and support among the public (Vanderschuere & Birdsall, 2018). Diversity within the military also has the potential to improve international relations, as the military serves as a representative of the United States on the global stage. A diverse military can better understand and relate to the diverse populations it may encounter during its operations, leading to more effective communication and cooperation.
Continuing Importance of Diversity to Military Effectiveness and Credibility
Diversity in the United States military is a topic with a long and complex history and one that continues to evolve. The military has made significant progress in promoting diversity, but there is still work to be done. Examining the topic through various lenses—including history, the humanities, natural and applied sciences, and social sciences—highlights the many ways in which diversity affects all aspects of military life. From a cultural and societal perspective, the military serves as a leader in promoting understanding and acceptance. From a scientific perspective, the military relies on objective data and evidence-based decision-making when evaluating the capabilities of diverse service members. From a social sciences perspective, diversity in the military has a wide-reaching impact on society, both domestically and internationally. The promotion of diversity is an ongoing process that is vital to the success and credibility of the military.
