Proposed Feminist Analysis of Gender and Social Conformity in Barbie
In this report, I assess Barbie (2023), directed by Greta Gerwig. Through its feminist investigation, the film challenges established gender norms while exploring personal empowerment and the social demand for conformity. Barbie Land represents feminist achievement, while the patriarchal dimensions of ordinary reality support an analysis of how gender roles are developed and reinforced through digital and social media throughout the film.
The Warner Bros.-produced film Barbie features Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the main cast. It appeals to the wider public and dedicated Barbie doll enthusiasts while exploring gender-focused themes. The story addresses struggles involving privilege and oppression while revealing how gender interacts with race, class status, and other elements of identity.
My analysis examines how the film participates in feminist discourse by exploring its narrative structures, character arcs, and visual design. This essay applies foundational feminist concepts from the coursework to analyse how gender roles are represented in the film and suggests ways in which its inclusive framework could be expanded.
