Ethical Responsibilities in Family Relationships and Identity Recognition

In Case 11a, the moral issue is about parents’ responsibility to extend moral responsibility to what they prefer and have in mind versus accepting what they perceive as their child’s identity. In this case, the daughter and her parents are the parties involved. They consider withdrawing emotional and familial support because, to the parents who see her sexuality as morally wrong, she is mistaken. However, from an ethics of care standpoint, moral commitment should focus on preserving a supportive and loving relationship versus complying with one’s personal beliefs at the cost of one’s daughter’s comfort.

Competing Moral Claims in Child Custody and Caregiving Relationships

The issue raised by Case 11 is whether biological parental rights have priority over the child’s interest. The parties involved are the biological parents, the child, and the foster parents. The moral issue with the law is that the decision to restore custodial rights to the rehabilitated parents takes into consideration the emotional bonds that have been formed during the period of separation. In light of a care ethics perspective, the biological parents would have a weaker moral claim than the foster parents, who have consistently provided stability and love.

Honesty, Trust, and Manipulation in Intimate Relationships

The moral issue of deception in relationships is presented in Case 20. There is an issue regarding honesty, trust, and manipulation raised by Elvira’s choice to feign pregnancy to force Ethelred to marry her. Elvira and Ethelred are the parties to the matter. Ethics are based on the principles of respecting autonomy and informed consent, which are violated through Elvira’s actions. Although she believes her deception is for good reasons, her actions ultimately undermine trust and harm the relationship.
