She completed her internship at the agency where she developed positive relationships with clients, which paved the way for her employment. She strongly desired to see such people recover and return to their everyday lives.
Mental Health Services and Professional Satisfaction in Clinical Practice

Motivations for Entering the Social Work Profession
Why did this person choose a career in social work?
Initially, she knew very little about social work, but her sister worked in the profession and influenced her career change. By the time she completed her internship, she had developed a strong passion for the field. In addition, she gained a deeper understanding of mental health issues and wished to support individuals experiencing challenges similar to those she had encountered personally.
Personal Interest in Social Work and Commitment to Advocacy
Discuss why or why not you would want this social worker's job.
I would take on this social worker's job since I have always felt that my purpose in life is to help others improve their mental health. Upon entering the profession, I would like to focus more on child welfare and support for women and children. Social workers are agents of change, and the profession provides both purpose and diversity. Serving those in need and improving the responsiveness of social agencies to human needs constitute the core duties of social work (Indeed, 2021). In addition, the person-in-environment perspective emphasized by social work and its steadfast dedication to social justice and equality distinguish it from many related professions. These aspects align with my desire to help women and children access and safeguard their welfare.
Additionally, social workers address the external factors that affect an individual's circumstances and perspectives. They provide opportunities for assessment and intervention to assist clients and communities in coping effectively with their situations and, when necessary, changing them. Social workers help clients understand their feelings and identify ways to improve their situations. They assist people of all ages and backgrounds across many settings (NASW, 2022). As a social worker, I would help children and women improve circumstances affecting their mental health while also helping them understand and manage their emotions. In addition, I would assist individuals in finding important information and offer guidance regarding life-changing decisions. Finally, social workers support reforms that strengthen the social safety net and improve social conditions.
Social workers conduct their profession with the belief that everyone deserves dignity and humane treatment. Their approach recognizes that many individuals and groups cannot adequately advocate for themselves. Governments and society would struggle to understand and support these populations without social workers (Indeed, 2021). Children and women are among the groups whose voices often require advocacy and support, particularly regarding mental health needs.
Reflection on the Interview Experience and Professional Impressions
Reflect on some of your thoughts (positive or negative) throughout the interview process.
While interviewing the social worker, I developed both positive and negative impressions regarding her responses and interactions. The answers were concise and often required follow-up questions to obtain complete information. I initially expected more detailed explanations related to each topic. Had I not elaborated on some questions, important information might have been overlooked.
I also reflected on her decision to decline a Christmas gift from a client. While social work ethics prohibit accepting gifts from clients, I initially viewed the gesture as a sincere expression of appreciation from someone who had experienced positive change through therapy.
Additionally, I had positive thoughts about how she provided valuable insight into becoming a social worker. Despite having no initial interest in the profession, she observed the positive impact of her sister's work and developed a desire to help others. She then made the significant decision to change careers, complete an internship, and dedicate herself to serving clients. Furthermore, she agreed to participate in the interview despite maintaining a busy schedule with numerous client responsibilities. Her willingness to dedicate time to the interview demonstrated professionalism and generosity.
Evaluation of Professional Knowledge and Clinical Competence
Discuss if the social worker was knowledgeable about their job and their role as a social worker.
In my opinion, the social worker demonstrated substantial knowledge regarding her job and role. She clearly explained one-on-one psychotherapy and provided examples of coping skills, including self-care routines. She described psychotherapy as a process that seeks positive change in a person's interpersonal environment, relationships, and life circumstances through face-to-face discussion, with the goal of reducing emotional and mental distress.
A psychotherapist is a trained professional who assists individuals experiencing mental health challenges such as stress, anxiety, insomnia, addiction, negative behavioral patterns, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other emotional difficulties. Psychotherapy helps people understand suppressed emotions and empowers them to face present and future challenges (Radhakrishnan, 2020). Throughout the interview, it became evident that she understood her responsibilities thoroughly and remained committed to helping clients improve their mental health and overall well-being.
Most Memorable Aspects of the Interview Experience
Discuss what impressed you the most about this interview.
The aspect that impressed me most was her willingness to take time from her busy schedule to participate in the interview. She also allowed the interview to be recorded for later review. Another impressive aspect was her career journey. She began in a different academic discipline and eventually discovered that her purpose was to become a social worker. Her dedication to helping others and commitment to professional growth were inspiring.
