Reality Television and the Representation of Culture in Contemporary Society
Authenticity of Cultural Representation in U.S. Reality Television
Even though it bears the label "reality," it somehow avoids depicting actual events or events occurring in U.S. culture (PRESS BOOKS, n.d.). Most of these programs primarily present to the public idealized cultures of societies and families.
Influence of Reality Television on Cultural Values and Social Behavior
Reality television makes up the most significant percentage of daily television viewing in an ordinary American home. These facts make it clear how reality television might affect American culture. Numerous studies have found that viewers of reality television shows experienced awareness and motivation, whereas others experienced abuse, anxiety, and other negative emotions (PRESS BOOKS, n.d.). Unquestionably, reality television has influenced the culture and values mirrored in it.
Global Expansion of Reality Television and Its Impact on Popular Culture
Other civilizations will inevitably impact U.S. popular culture because it has spread beyond the United States and into distant nations. Curiosity will grow, and this mixture of popular cultures will have an effect.
Government Oversight of Reality Television Programming in China
The majority of reality television shows attempt to showcase the many political and contentious social issues in a nation to persuade and educate viewers. The Chinese government is concerned about the spread of these reality television programs.
Potential for Future Regulation of Reality Television in the United States
Yes. The U.S. government is mainly concerned with reality television shows' primary objective, which is to increase social awareness. One approach to continue maintaining control over people and influencing them is to manage the information allowed into their thoughts. The government will not remain silent if these shows depict "real" problems and cultures.
Response to Peer Discussion on Reality Television and Cultural Influence
Hello Tasia Hummel,
I appreciate your insights and discussion on culture and reality television. Your responses are insightful and inspirational and express your deep thoughts and extensive research on culture and its relation to reality television. I agree with your views on portraying people's real culture. Most reality television shows represent the real culture and experiences of the people and families they feature; however, the content portrayed may undergo censorship. The shows do not present the real or actual happenings in U.S. culture but rather portray idealized ideas and cultures about certain families and people. Given that reality television is among the most-watched forms of television programming in the United States, it has had a significant influence on culture by changing people's way of life. In addition, I agree that globalization has exposed people to diverse cultures, leading to the expansion of reality television and affecting people's lives positively. Government intervention in regulating reality television shows would aim to control the content released to the public.
