Response to the Discussion on Symptom Management for COPD and Pulmonary Fibrosis

As a hospice nurse, I can definitely relate to the importance of symptom management and comfort measures for patients with COPD or pulmonary fibrosis. The use of oxygen therapy can be a crucial component in the management of these conditions, but as you mentioned, it is important to provide education on its proper and safe use to prevent any potential hazards. I also agree that utilizing liquid morphine can be a beneficial treatment option for patients experiencing dyspnea and air hunger, despite the misconceptions that it may hasten death.

One aspect of symptom management that I have found to be beneficial for my patients with COPD or pulmonary fibrosis is the use of non-pharmacological interventions such as deep breathing exercises and relaxation techniques. A study by Kang et al. (2019) found that a deep breathing exercise program led to a significant improvement in dyspnea and quality of life in patients with COPD. Additionally, relaxation techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation and guided imagery have been found to reduce anxiety and improve breathing in patients with COPD (NHS, 2021).

It is important to remember that oxygen is a medication that can be hazardous if used incorrectly, and patients should receive clear education on its proper use and safety measures. Likewise, the sensation of breathlessness is subjective, so patients should take morphine only when they experience increased difficulty breathing, as directed by their healthcare provider. Open and honest communication with patients is essential to achieving the best possible outcomes. By addressing both the physical and emotional symptoms associated with COPD and pulmonary fibrosis, healthcare professionals can improve patients’ overall comfort and quality of life.
