Comparative Evaluation of Employee Motivation and Work Perception
The last employee is very determined since he knows the reason for doing the task. Even though he is not sculpting the stone, he feels like he is helping to build the cathedral. The second employee is conscious that he is working on a project for which he is not only barely motivated but also lacking enthusiasm, while the first employee does not even like his job.
Since the third employee is making a substantial effort and is aware of the purpose of the task, the theory to be used for motivation among all three employees is Locke's Goal-Setting Theory. This theory states that the intention to achieve a specific goal is the primary source of work motivation (Chap 12 part I.MP4, n.d., 00:56–01:02).
Application of Goal-Setting Theory to Workplace Engagement
Additionally, I can relate to the three construction workers who said they were helping to build a cathedral, which represents the main goal to be achieved. A low-level worker will be more motivated to assist the business in achieving its aim if he is informed of its target and goal. He will give the company his full focus to help it achieve its objectives.
As in the circumstances described, the employee with the least understanding is the one who is not conscious of the task he is carrying out or the goal he is helping to achieve. He does not feel a strong sense of purpose in his work, even if he completes it.
Organizational Responsibility in Enhancing Workforce Motivation
As a result, it is primarily the role of top management to ensure that everyone in the organization is aware of the company’s values, objectives, and goals. This awareness will raise the morale of the workforce. Company goals will act as a source of motivation for employees, and they will contribute their efforts more effectively to achieve these goals.
